The Art of Practicing

I have always believed that success, in practically any subject you can think of, is a direct result of "clear thinking". That is, the ability to understand very clearly what needs to be achieved and the action to set about surmounting very necessary hurdles in order to reach those goals. Less than successful people are either not clear in their goals or for one reason or another give up along the way. It's leveling that rough terrain, along with a clearly defined end result in mind that will get you there in the end. The success roadmap might go something like this:

Visualize goal => Surmount problems => Score

Sounds simple doesn't it? However, this clear thinking is all very well but it's usually the thought required before step 1 (visualization) that causes problems. Very often the goal does not manifest in mind because the process is so overwhelming.

And so it is with practicing the guitar, or any instrument for that matter. In more laymen's terms it's more like "What the hell should I be practicing?".

Practice is a constant struggle for many people. There is so much to learn and often so little time to allocate to it. For the jazz musician, clear thinking can be as simple as "I really like that Charlie Parker 2, 5 - how does he do that?". Then transcribing the line, practicing it in all keys and working the phrase into your own vocabulary. The 'score' as I like to call it is the ability to work it in to your own playing. I want to talk a little about that in a minute.

First, I think the most important thing to talk about is how to make best use of your practice time. There was a time when I started playing where I used to sit in my room and allocate 15 minutes to practicing scales and arpeggios, 10 minutes on technique exercises, 20 minutes on sight reading and 1/2 an hour on practicing my classical guitar repertoire. Why? because my teacher told me I had to. Years later once I started to study jazz guitar on my own I didn't feel the need to be practicing this way. It wasn't really benefiting me fully. I started to have my own goals in mind that I wanted to reach. I wanted to learn to play like one or two of my heroes, but more importantly because I liked what they played. Even more under the microscope were certain melodic lines and licks that tweaked my ear and fueled me to transcribe or simply copy the way they phrased or 'felt' a phrase. Once I clearly had in mind what I wanted to achieve I could go about achieving it - I knew what I had to do.

It's important to sit down to practice and be really clear about what you are going to do during that practice time. Now, one thing that helped me tremendously was when I made a huge commitment to scheduled practicing. In other words, deciding that every single day, no matter what, I would sit down and dedicate exactly one hour to working at this instrument. The amazing thing I found is that my regularly scheduled practice literally fueled my regularly scheduled practice! Does this make sense? What this means is that, the more I practiced, the more I wanted to practice. What started out as a committed hour turned into committed six hour sessions. Once I got into music college in London I remember waking up in the morning and practicing until I went to bed at night, remembering to eat on occasion. I was so fueled by the commitment to practice that the drive to play took over completely.

Regular practice clearly keeps your guitar technique on tip top form. There's nothing like picking up the guitar and playing a few short runs and being on top of your game, simply because you are playing regularly.

The other wonderful thing about committing to regular practice is that it actually helps you to think much more clearly, because you start to see results. Once you start to see results the concept of learning is much less overwhelming and you are able to make decisions about what you want to work on much more easily.

So do yourself a huge favor, first, make the decision to want to get much better at your guitar playing. Then once you have decided that, make a clear commitment right now and allocate a certain time of day to your guitar practice. If you only have limited time then give yourself what you know you can afford. Once you get your teeth into this system, if you don't have more time, trust me you will want to find more time. You might just want to wake up earlier. The drive to learn will take over.

Quality practice is key. I find now I am older that, if I let myself, I can get more and more distracted because there are so many other facets to my life. When I make the decision to focus 100% on my guitar problems and how I can surmount them, I find I can get completely absorbed for hours once I get going. Sometimes it helps to avoid those distractions from the outset. Maybe turn the phone off!

There is a huge difference between playing the guitar and practicing the guitar. I can play for days quite happily but am I learning anything new? Not unless I stop myself and work on my weaknesses. And there are plenty of those trust me! Many years ago I wanted to learn licks from my favorite players. I would hear a line and transcribe it. Many times I found that those musical phrases would not come out in my playing and I asked myself why. It dawned on me that there were three possible reasons:

1) I found the phrase too technically difficult to pull off.

2) It just didn't feel like it belonged in my vocabulary.

3) I hadn't fully explored the idea enough - perhaps I didn't fully understand how to use it in a practical sense.

Let's talk about these briefly.

Sometimes a horn line does not necessarily fit under the fingers on the guitar. The line might sound just terrific on a sax but if I can't play it on my guitar it's not going to have the same effect. In fact quite the opposite! Everyone is somewhat limited technically (although there are a few players that keep my head scratching I must admit!), every player has a ceiling in their own mind and I think it's perfectly OK to let some things go because they are just two gymnastic on the guitar. It's of course relative to each player's ability and comfort zone.

Occasionally I'll try and work something into my music vocabulary and it just doesn't feel like me. Some players sound great playing certain things and when I play them them they either sound too much like that other great player or I just don't feel it. Music has to be personal, it's OK to weed out stuff that you don't want to use, even when those 'weeds' are a rose garden to others.

The last idea is something very important I think. That is the idea that when you work on some new vocabulary or a new harmonic idea, that you fully understand how to use it and just as importantly, how to work it into your playing so it comes out naturally. Let's assume you are transcribing a lick on a CD you like. The first thing to do is to make sure you get the notes right. You might slow it down (there is plenty of software on the market that enables you to do this now). Whatever it takes, make sure the notes you are transcribing are correct. Then it is a matter of practicing that phrase so it feels good when you play it.

Now most folks stop right there and wonder why the phrase never shows up in their playing. The secret is to figure out exactly what chord (or group of chords) is being played underneath that line. After that, figure out what other chords could also be played underneath that phrase. Next, learn how to play that phrase everywhere on the fretboard, in different positions and keys. Finally and the most important, work the phrase into your own playing. To do this, start by improvising in any way that you normally might and focus on ways to connect that new phrase you want to play. The new phrase starts on a certain note and you will need to focus on that starting note in order to make a connection to it. Practice improvising freely and connecting to that new phrase, focusing on its starting note. Do this in all keys. Pretty soon you will know if the phrase is going to come out into your playing or not.

The art of practice is a huge subject and musicians have written complete books on it. But I do believe the real success starts with clear thinking. Make a decision to focus on something specific. Here is a more detailed roadmap to take on board:

1) Visualize. What do you want to work on - what do you want to achieve?

2) Plan. What exactly do you have to do in order to achieve that goal?

3) Action. Explore the subject in enough detail.

4) Surmount. Expect problems along the way - this is normal - don't give up! Just level the terrain.

5) Score - making sure that the subject is fully absorbed and part of your new musical make up, unless you decide otherwise.

Great players really got to grips with practicing in the early stages. It became fascinating to them and the results they saw fueled more practice. It's a self perpetuating phenomenon. By simply not practicing, the incentive to pick up your instrument diminishes over time. Then the excuses start to pour out in torrents. Then regrets. Then a very dusty guitar possibly in a dark attic somewhere.

Get practicing. Quality practice. Ask yourself questions. Look for the answers. Insist on results. This is the key to improving.

How to Use a Golf DVD to Improve Your Golf Game

Why is it we are so excited when we walk out of the store with our new golf instruction DVD and within a few weeks it is collecting dust with all of the other DVDs that we loved when we bought them? Many of us are looking for a quick fix and it is just like the exercise DVD sitting on the shelf at home. Just because we sit on the couch or in our favorite chair, playing the DVD does not mean that we are going to lose any weight or get into any better shape.

After purchasing a golf instruction DVD by any instructor such as David Leadbetter, Jim McLean, Johnny Miller or various others, this is what you need to do to get the most for your money:

Golf Instruction DVD - The first time that you watch the DVD, Just simply watch it and enjoy it. Do not try to take every little morsel of information that you can out of it the very first time that you watch it. This is not as easy as it sounds to do as again we all want to improve as fast as we can. However keep in mind the first sentence said "The first time that you watch the DVD." Look at your new purchase as a long term investment into improving your golf game.

Golf Instruction DVD - The second time that you watch the information is when you want to get down and dirty with the information presented to you. Get yourself into a quiet place with a note book and take notes or create an outline of what the instructor is attempting to get across. The better that you understand the information at this point the better you will be able to implement it into your game.

Golf Instruction DVD - Take this information and create a plan of attack for your golf game. Now that you have taken notes and the information has sunk in a little more, how will it benefit you? Will it benefit you? I have watched different golf lesson DVDs and upon completion of the previous steps decided that that information did not work into my theory or system. This does not mean that it was a waste! I then knew that that info did not work for me and I did not have to waste my time on it any more in the future and would not travel down that road again.

Golf Instruction DVD - It is now time for the fun part. It is now time to go to the lab, oh sorry, the Driving Range, to test what you have come up with in your plan of attack. Again take notes of what does work and what does not work for you and your golf swing. This will give you the building blocks that you will need to build a system that works for you. This is very important to understand as we are not all built the same, come with different amounts of flexibility and are all wired differently.

With the information provided in this article, you will be able to get the most out of the next golf instruction DVD that you purchase and will shoot lower scores.

The Incredible Six Inch Death Stick - Yawara-jutsu

Yes, it's true! Yawara-jutsu is one of the old Japanese martial arts. One of its facets includes the use of a short, six-inch plain stick to strike 'death and terror' into the opponent.

The 'experts' will claim that it is used to jab kyusho or Dim Mak points resulting in severe shock to the system. This is only partly true. One hits vulnerable areas, it is true, but these are not necessarily surface 'vital points'. They overlie deep nerves or organs which, if hit effectively, result in shock and bodily collapse. The same effect (almost) as when a footballer is accidentally kicked in the groin.

The stick can be held as a hammer, smacking down into a surface bone like the wrist. Or it can be 'flicked' in a back-hand motion into say the teeth or the eye. Short and sharp somewhat like cracking a whip.

Probably its best use perhaps is holding at the middle, stabbing down like a knife into the neck or other target. Conversely it can stab upwards into the under-jaw. If then it is ripped forwards it could hopefully dislocate the jaw.

A more skilled use is in come-along holds and bone or joint breaks. But this is advanced technical studies requiring much (much!) practice and training in a martial arts club. If you expect to be successful.

There is an American version developed by Frank Matsuyama. This version has metal spikes to hamper someone trying to wrench it away. I quite like it, but while it fits easily into the pocket, it is clearly a martial arts weapon, and as such leaves you wide open to police prosecution if use for self defence. An Internet search will take you directly to it. But the plain stick is 'safer' and true to the Japanese yawara-jutsu origins. The Matsuyama stick is metal, heavier and very effective, but advisedly should not be carried where you feel danger lies. Far better go elsewhere and so avoid killing someone and also avoid going to jail which you assuredly will if you use it.

His manual "How To Use The Yawara Stick" can be downloaded, but as it is written specifically for police officers who already have martial arts experience and as a substitute for their truncheon, it is not at all suitable for the novice. But if you are Blue Belt or higher, you will enjoy it.

The stick is said to have arisen from the knife fighting techniques of Tanto-jutsu, a segment of the overall Yawara-jutsu wider school. In wet or sweaty conditions a knife could jam in its sheath, and techniques were - of course - developed to allow the defender to still use it in this inconvenient situation. Furthermore, yawara-jutsu was less dangerous than actually stabbing someone. [Remember that, Young Jimmie, when you're out with the lads! Don't carry a knife - a Yawara stick is very effective and keeps you out of a prison life sentence]

There have been several modern refinements on the basic Yawara approach. Notably in Matsuyama's stick, mentioned above, and Tak Kubota's little Kubotan ®. The Matsuyama 'stick' (lump of metal!) is very good indeed, but too lethal. The Kubotan is all very well, but it's too small and light for my needs. I don't see any advantage at all in carrying it. Not when the karatetsu can do all and much more. I have the Kubotan, but it stays in the cabinet.

Both the basic Yawara stick and the Matsuyama and Kubota versions suffer from the same basic fundamental defect: they can be used as stabbing and chopping weapons, but they are not by their very nature suited to direct, thrusting strikes. The hand is physically not intended to jab forwards in a straight, punch-like direction. Not when it is holding a stick in a vertical alignment.

This is where the karatetsu scores supremely. It can deliver all types of Yawara attacks - as well as physiologically correct forward, direct punching mugger-dropping blows.

But wait! This article is meant as an introduction to Yawara-jutsu techniques. For interested sportsmen (alright, and women). But all the time giving you an effective self-defence system - while keeping you safely within the benevolent smile of the Law.

There are two things you need:

1 A DOG. Or access to a friend's dog. Either being walked by you. Or having made prior arrangement with a dog owner that you can at anytime of your choice go along and take Fido (Fido - ughh!) out 'through the park at night' for a stroll. Through the park or the woods (or anywhere where you were actually attacked by the mugger or would-be rapist and needed an excuse ...)

2 A SIX-INCH LONG STIFF DOG CHEW. Buy two, keep one in a drawer, the other in your handbag when going out alone somewhere.

This is what it's all about. The dog chew is a MOST effective substitute for an actual wooden, plastic or metal Yawara stick. Hard and solid, it can stab, thrust, jab, pierce eyeballs, tear up an unsuspecting groin (a mugger would NOT be unsuspecting!) But with no legal risk to you. You were not carrying a self defence weapon. You were walking, or going to walk, or coming back from walking a dog (liase with your friend) when you were attacked. When you beat up the unsuspecting yob. (Who is now trying to sue you for damages sustained). He did not see any weapon threat, you tucked it out of sight behind your buttock when you first sensed danger. Then- WHACK!

Be sure to give Fido (Fido - Ughh!) a pat when you've recovered from being a hero/ine!

The Family Stone (DVD) Review

One of the surprise films of 2005, The Family Stone successfully navigates the often tempestuous waters of big screen family dramas. Quite often these types of family relationship films get lost in a deluge of dialogue, conflict, and argument. And although The Family Stone has plenty of the aforementioned, it hits the audience in manageable doses with well-placed comic relief and an unforgettable cast of eccentric characters. Written and directed by up-and-coming Hollywood talent Thomas Bezucha, the film is a mosaic of fun, laughter, sadness, and family relationships most people will find charming and endearing...

The Family Stone examines the vibrant relationships of the Stone family, a close-knit traditional nuclear family gathering for the holidays. Sybil Stone (Diane Keaton) and her husband Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) host their children for the holidays, but as with most families, conflict is abundant. Sarcasm, backstabbing, blame, and jealousy are evident in almost every encounter, but ironically, so are love and respect. When eldest son Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings home his current girlfriend Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker) to meet the family, her business-like demeanor and uptight mannerisms clash with the rest of the family, particularly Everett's vindictive sister Amy (Rachel McAdams). Despite Meredith's best efforts, the only family member she can impress is Everett's laidback brother Ben (Luke Wilson).

Meredith's discomfort is compounded when she inadvertently makes a bigoted remark about Everett's homosexual brother Thad (Tyrone Giordano), garnering the wrath of the entire family. Pushed to her breaking point, Meredith moves from the house to a nearby bed and breakfast, while Everett struggles with the idea of proposing to a woman his family obviously dislikes. Meanwhile, Ben helps Meredith to come out of her shell, and Meredith enlists the support of her younger sister Julie (Claire Danes) to smooth things over with the Stones. But the holidays take an interesting twist when unexpected relationships blossom and an unforeseen event takes its toll on the entire family...

The Family Stone certainly succeeds in creating a number of dynamic multidimensional characters, but it fails in a couple respects. The most obvious is the relationship switch that eventually takes place and is quite evidently in the making from the opening scenes of the film. One brother stealing another's girlfriend is not in-and-of itself unbelievable, but the continuation of a normal relationship between the two brothers is. No awkwardness there? No jealousy? Plot twists are great, but keep them realistic...

The other aspect of The Family Stone that stands out is a bit more peripheral and makes the film teeter on the precipice of Hollywood cliché. Meredith is portrayed as an uptight homophobic bigot in need of a cure, while the Stone family is free-spirited and in touch with their feelings. In the end, Meredith grows because of her proximity to the Stones, but the Stones don't learn anything from Meredith. It's probably not a coincidence that Meredith's views might be construed as conservative, while the Stones' views are considered liberal (i.e. conservative evil, liberal good). This same theme was prevalent in Meet The Fockers when Robert De Niro's character learns the error of his uptight ways and engages in the hippie lifestyle of his daughter's new in-laws. But, of course, the Fockers never learn anything from De Niro... Not necessarily a movie killer, but a cliché nonetheless. Despite the flaws, The Family Stone is still a decent film. Above par dialogue and outstanding performances by a strong cast make it time well spent. Many moments will make you laugh; others will remind you of your own family...

Which Golf Tips Should You Listen To?

There are good golf tips and bad golf tips. The question is, "how do you decide which golf tips to listen to?"

This question has been brought home to me recently because a good friend took up golf about two years ago. He has really caught the bug and plays several times a week. He also has lessons and practices frequently. Whenever we play together he is constantly asking for tips and advice about his swing.

It is my belief that you should only give a player a golf tip if you are sure that it will fit in with the rest of his swing. I have seen far too many players who often use Callaway X-22 Iron Set to  lose their swings when trying to adopt a golf tip which simply does not fit in with everything else that goes on when they swing the club (Callaway FT-IQ Driver).

OK, I know, there are certain golf tips which are universally sound, like, "keep your head still." But equally there are plenty of other golf tips that can be ruinous even when given with the best of intentions.

In particular I recall a good player with whom I'd played many rounds who always drew the ball right to left, usually with good control. One day when his draw was a bit exaggerated, his partner suggested this perfectly sound golf tip: "You know, if you were to keep your right elbow well tucked in on the downswing you would lose that nasty hook."

The suggestion was well meant. However, for a player who had a well grooved habit of swinging slightly over the top of the ball, as Arnold Palmer was wont to do, it proved to be one golf tip too much. He became so conscious of his right elbow that it threw the whole of the rest of his swing out of shape and it took him months to get it back again.

The point is that the golf tip didn't fit in with the rest of his swing.

This is a mistake that many golfers make. They listen to all the golf tips out there and try to adopt them all in their desperate search for a good swing. It is my belief that your aim should be to groove a golf swing that will give you streams of straight and long golf shots by modelling your swing on one set of advice. Then you should develop a mind movie of that swing so that you can reproduce it whenever you play a shot.

Think how long some of the most famous partnerships between players and their swing coaches have lasted. Think of Jack Nicklaus and Jack Grout, Tiger Woods and Butch Harmon, Nick Faldo and David Leadbetter to name but a few. All these great players relied on one coach's vision of their swing to keep their mind movie in shape. They did not go asking for golf tips from other players.

Golf Driving Range - How to Use Efectively

A Golf Driving Range is a place where golfers can go and practice and sometimes even warm up before starting a match.

A golf driving range is a large open area such as a grass covered field, with a line of hitting platforms arranged along one edge of the field. These individual hitting platforms will often include a tee for hitting golf drives into the field.

The driving range is where you should be spending most of your time when just starting out with the game of golf. It offers you the opportunity to learn the distance at which each of your Golf Clubs can hit. It teaches you to focus on a target. It helps you to make contact with the ball every time you swing.

Practicing Your Short Game

Many golf ranges also offer an opportunity to improve your short game skills. Some of these facilities offer one or two green areas that are set aside for men and women to practice their shots which require shorter distances.

A big mistake is made by many beginner golfers. They spend an enormous amount of time hitting the long shots, yet never develop their short game skills.

An appropriate strategy would be to split your time, perhaps one day at the standard range and the next at the short game area.

The Hunt For Real Grass

Although hard to find in most locations, a driving range that offers real grass to practice on is invaluable. Most private clubs and high end golf courses offer access to a driving range that has natural grass. The reason why real grass is preferred over turf is simply because it mimics the exact conditions you will play in during a real game of golf at the local course

Be Considerate When Hitting Balls On Real Grass

While utilizing a driving range that offers real grass to hit the ball from is preferable, some beginners may not be ready to handle such a quality service due to their inability to control their swing.

It is good etiquette to take care of the grass as best possible. For example, when taking a nice shot with an iron, you will almost always create a divot, which is simply a large chunk of grass cut out from your swing.

Too many of these shots can ruin the turf temporarily, until the grounds keepers shut down the area and reseed with new grass. Try to hit every ball as close to where you hit the last ball. Doing so will reduce the areas of divots created to just one spot in particular.

It is inevitable that the grass to be damaged, and the facility management understands this, but your job is to minimize this damage as much as you can.

Carbon wheels are a big investment on your MTB. They cost much more than traditional steel wheels, but their incredibly light weight makes them worth every penny. In this post I want to share with you how to make sure they last a long time, as well as one of the best sets of mountain bike wheels on the market.

It's extremely important to remember that while carbon is very strong, it doesn't take impact well. Improperly clamping your carbon wheels in a repair stand can cause some major damage. Also, much of the damage can't even be seen, so you have to do everything you can to protect it while not riding. If you are concerned that your wheels may be damaged, have a pro inspect them. Carbon wheels can give out without warning when they are compromised!

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your wheels is the same as steel. Clean them with soap, water, and a soft cloth or towel. Be sure to thoroughly dry them off.

The son and father still enjoyed the races, talking frequently through the season of who's on top, which driver moved where and how the Ferrari team was doing. While in Vancouver the son continually said one day I'll gat dad to see Ferrari in Montreal. Then came the bad news… Formula 1 was no longer in North America. The dream was all but extinguished. Life went on, when the young family in Vancouver got the opportunity to reunite with the rest of their extended family and move back in Ontario.  That same year even more great news greeted the son…Formula 1 was returning to Montreal….could it happen… could he get his elderly, almost now 80 year old father to Montreal to see his beloved Ferrari Team?
The son prepared a surprise for Father and now with a 16 year old son of his own, named partially after his Father, he order 3 Race tickets, hotel and rail tickets for this great once in a lifetime chance, for the three generations of race fans to attend and feel the excitement of the Formula 1 race on Canadian soil.
